The Introverted School
Design of an elementary school merged with a medical facility addressing the social exclusion of elderly
Academic Work. June, 2021

The project addresses the significant aging of the Italian population and the issue of social exclusion among seniors. From these reflections arises the design strategy: to create a novel school concept with integrated medical facilities for the elderly and the broader community. The goal is to establish a school that not only welcomes students but also hosts diverse training activities and cultural events, all while safeguarding vulnerable groups like the elderly and children. Located in Nembro, a municipality deeply affected by the pandemic, the chosen site holds particular significance. The permanent presence of a medical facility for primary care enhances the building's public value, serving as a crucial healthcare hub for the neighborhood and aiding in the community's recovery.

The keywords "introversion" and "interaction" define this new, open, and adaptable school paradigm. The design's distinct feature is the intentional placement of outdoor spaces within the school's interiors, emphasizing introversion and child safety. Simultaneously, the school acts as a barrier, separating a semi-private courtyard from the remaining plot, providing both security and a sense of community. Constructed with prefabricated concrete panels, the school's layout is meticulously planned to maximize panel usage efficiency. This design approach not only prioritizes durability and sustainability but also allows for flexibility in space utilization, ensuring the school can adapt to evolving educational and community needs over time.
