The project proposes a new construction for a cantonal school in Stein, Switzerland. It focuses on creating a variety of didactic spaces centered on learning from experts, peers, oneself, the real world, through showing and sharing, individual learning, and collaborative work. The building concept includes a main central space serving multiple functions and as a central circulation hub. This inner space becomes a central part of the school and the architectural highlight of the program.
The central space on the ground floor features a circular courtyard serving as an outdoor contemplation area during breaks, with a walkable roof. The main central space includes collaborative and individual workspaces near the courtyard windows and a canteen. The high school’s didactic program is divided into science, music, sport, and arts, each with its own dedicated space within the building. The school is designed as four distinct parts connected by the central space on the ground floor. Each of the four parts of the building has its own identity and purpose, offering different didactic spaces. The entire building employs a timber post-and-beam construction, with a more elaborate timber construction supporting the central space.
